For those of you that enjoy fantasy movies you will be excited to hear that Sir Ian McKellen has finally signed on to portray Gandalf in the two Hobbit movies. Yes, you heard me correctly. There will be a part I and a part II.

The second film will advance the story beyond the ending of the book, filling in gaps between the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and those of his heir, Frodo, as recounted in The Lord of the Rings. How exactly that will fall out and what material will be used in which film has yet to be decided. source

Ian McKellen was waiting for the royalty dispute between New Line Cinema and Peter Jackson to be resolved so that Peter Jackson would be involved with the film adaptation of The Hobbit.

While I was disappointed when I heard that Jackson was not going to direct, my second choice would be Guillermo del Toro. In a nice coincidence (or was it?) del Toro is the person that is signed on to direct.

If you’re unfamiliar with del Toro, Hellboy and Pans Labyrinth are highly recommended, and Hellboy 2 is released in theaters July 11th. You can check out the trailers for Hellboy 2 here.
